Do You Know When To Use A Fire Extinguisher?

Before using a fire extinguisher, it’s important to consider the following:
  • Call 911 first and follow their instructions. You can skip this step if the fire is small, and contained to a trash can or stove-top. If there’s any chance the fire can spread, or is spreading, then call 911 immediately.
  • Begin evacuating others from the area. Seconds count.
  • Be familiar with how to use a fire extinguisher before you need it. (I wrote another blog on the proper operation of a fire extinguisher.)
  • Only use if you have a safe evacuation route. You do not want to get yourself trapped with no exit.
  • Consider whether the fire is small enough for the extinguisher you have. Extinguishers are great for a stove top fire, a trash fire, or any other small localized fire. When the fire is several feet high or wide, it may be too late. If it’s reached the ceiling, it is too late. When it’s too late, evacuate the premises immediately.
  • Consider the amount of smoke in the area. Smoke can overtake an area quickly. If it’s thick or you begin coughing or you’re having trouble breathing, leave immediately.
  • If the fire is unreasonably hot, evacuate immediately.
Make sure the extinguisher is appropriate for the type of fire. Different types of fire extinguishers have different labels, indicating what it works best for. The most common type is the ABC dry powder extinguisher.
  • “A” is for common combustibles like trash or wood.
  • “B” is for liquid grease or oil.
  • “C” is for electrical fires.

When To Call 911

Please remember that extinguishers are for small fires. Some fires get out of hand so quickly that you need to take bigger action. If the fire is large or producing excessive smoke, or too hot, evacuate quickly and safely. If you followed my advice and called 911, help is already on the way!
