It’s difficult to think about kids getting injured in fire-related accidents. The fact is, kids are more likely to get hurt or injured than adults. Teaching our little ones age appropriate fire safety tips is a great way to help keep them safe.
A Few Key Statistics
Some important numbers to keep in mind:
About 500 children die in fire-related accidents each year.
About 300 people die every year from children playing with fire or things that cause fire.
Over half the fires are started in the bedroom.
Over 70% of the fires involve matches or lighters. Other sources are candles, fireworks, stoves and cigarettes.
Only ¼ of the homes have an fire escape plan.
Over 95% of homes have smoke detectors but only about 75% have at least 1 working smoke detector.
Easy Things We Can Do To Keep Our Children Safe
The good news is that there are things we can do around the house and some pretty easy things we can teach our kids to help keep them safe. A few tips:
Keep smoke detectors operational in the home. Let kids hear the alarm by pushing the button on the detector. They need to know what a smoke alarm sounds like.
Keep a working fire extinguisher handy. Check the pressure monthly.
Children should not attempt to fight a fire in any way. Teach them to either evacuate or get an adult if they see a fire.
Create a fire exit plan for your household. Practice your fire drill on a regular basis. • Teach them about Stop, Drop and Roll.
Tell them that smoke rises and if they see smoke, get below it to leave the home.
Invest in a second story ladder and teach them how to use it. Don’t actually have them climb down one unless there is a real emergency.
Teach them how to call 911 for emergencies.
Keep lighters and matches up and out of reach.
Kids love to copy us. Teach them that appliances like stoves, fireplaces and grills are off-limits.
Another great ways to teach kids about fire safety is with Amazon‘s Echo or Google Assistant devices. If you have these, there is a skill named, “Pedro’s Fire Challenge by American Red Cross”. It’s fun and geared toward kids. You can open it everyday and new tips and games will help your child learn how to be safe while having fun doing it.
